I want to become a helicopter pilot in the armed forces. I'm not sure which branch but which is the easiest? Which do you need a college degree to train as a pilot? And what kind of degree do you need? I was thinking of the Coast Guard but I'm not sure. Which branch has better benefits and pay? I just wanted some general tips and stuff. Thanks!|||I love the Coast Guard, no doubt about that... However, the CG will not guarantee what you will get to fly. You can be selected to flight school but there are no guarantees of rotor or fixed wing. I'm not sure if the other services guarantee which type of craft you will fly. But that is something to consider if you look at the CG. The CG also will not guarantee you flight school. You would need a degree, preferred in something in the Engineering type of field, you would then have to be selected to OCS (Officers Candidate School) then further selected to flight school. All of that comes with zero guarantee.
Best of luck in your decision.|||All 5 branches have good rotary wing aviation units. But there are differences. Here's the breakdown:
ARMY: Officers can be helo pilots, but most are Warrant Officers. Both combat and rescue missions. Army has the most choppers.
NAVY: Sea missions, a lot of helicopters too, but you have to be an officer. Pp
Air Force: hardly any choppers, mostly jets, not the place to be if you want to fly helicopters.
Marines: great helo pilots, officers only, similar to Army.
Overall, I'd say your best bet would be either Amry or Marines. But there is an 8 year service commitment for flying leathernecks, and only 5 for Army pilots. So if i had to do it, I'd pick Army.
Coast Guard: Very few pilots in general, very hard to get selected, mostly rescue missions.|||I would consider what type of helicopter you want to fly. What kind of missions would you rather be assigned? Search and Rescue? Close Air Support (Combat)?|||Benefits, and pay are the same in all branches, I believe the Army has more rotary wing aircraft than the Coast Guard has|||The US Army has the largest fleet of helicopters in the world.
So...that means more open slots for you to try and become one.|||Army.
