Hi there! I'm 16, my boyfriend's 18, and he wants to join the military in December. Since i'm still in high school, I won't be able to live on base with him or anything like that. What branch of the military has the least amount of years would he have to serve, as well as time he would be at home? Honestly, I would just want to get the whole experience over with.|||NONE! The military is in the business of going to war! therefore military members will be deployed worldwide!
YOU have to be married to live on base! girlfriends don't qualify! besides he will be in the barracks!
He has to serve a total of 8 years and will be issued a female military member as his girlfriend or wife!
It's not an "experience" , joining the military is very serious business!!!|||first off - it has nothing to do with you, its his choice to do what he wants. either you be supportive or you don't.
second off - first enlistment contracts are all 8 year contracts, it just depends on how you divide the years.
most go 4 active duty, 4 inactive reserves. you could also do 5/8, or 6/8
he could sign up to be a reservist, which would mean he stays home all the time, except 1 weekend a month he would have to go train, and 2 weeks during the summer.
he could possibly get extremely lucky and be stationed somewhere near home, but that almost never happens until you deploy once.|||None of the branches have to offer what you are asking for. Every branch requries at least an 8 year initial enlistment...now that 8 years can be divided up between active duty v. reserves v. IRR.
Much is demanded in especially the first several years of any servicemember's career...what with basic training, tech school, getting to their first assignment AND learning to perform their jobs independently, competently. And given that we are gonna be in the Middle East for the forseable future, he can expect at least one deployment during his enlistment.|||i don't know. maybe this is a question your boyfriend should be asking as he's the one interested in enlisting, not you. last time i checked girlfriends are obsolete on the subject matter and decision making.|||Unfortunatly hon he is just your boyfriend. Girls do long distance military relationships all the time. Reserves is the only way he can be home. They will station him wherever the world they need him otherwise.|||Air Force is the closest branch to civilian life. Doesn't exactly have what your asking for but close enough -- good luck on the relationship.|||Go Coastie or National Guard. Otherwise... too bad.

the RAF is mainly based in the UK so....
