What does the olive branch symbolize in a non-religious context?

What is its origin?

I know the story of Noah and the flood when Noah sends out a dove to find land and the dove comes back with an olive branch, but what does the olive branch symbolize/mean in a non-religious context?|||The olive branch as a symbol of peace and goodwill has nothing to do with the biblical story of the flood. It comes from Greek culture. Olive wreaths were worn by brides and awarded to the victor in an athletic competition.|||My pleasure. :-)
